THE FRAGMENTA “DESIGN”-PROJECT:
The FRAGMENTA-project during the Malta Design Week is to showcase postcards. Designed postcards; Over- or underdesigned postcards; Postcards which we have received or even purposely bought; Postcards that are designed in a way that they become awkward, or even outspokenly “wrong” or ugly. This judgement lies in the eye of the postcard-holder.
We are taking our point of departure from the context of the so-called “Speculative design process” which doesn’t necessarily define a specific problem to solve, but establishes a provocative starting point from which a design process can emerge. We aim at questioning design in order to provoke questions and stimulate discussions. We also aim at having a bit of fun with design.
FRAGMENTA will participate in the Satellite Event organized by AP Malta – http://maltadesignweek.com/project/in-pursuit-of-dreams-by-architecture-project/ on May 22nd. FRAGMENTA will present an image slide projection (looped) – on monitor or via projector.
LOOKING FOR:
For this event, FRAGMENTA is collecting images of ugly, over- or underdesigned, wrong or bizarre, ready-made (found) postcards. The postcards will be shown in a digital slide-projection without indication of the postcard-owner. Please feel free to participate!
To participate, you can
1) Send your postcards to FRAGMENTA office, Flat2, The Mall 24, Floriana, or arrange a meeting to hand over the postcards. (Contact fragmentamalta(a)gmail.com for any question). The postcards will only be borrowed for the purpose of taking a picture and will be returned to the owner.
2) Send a digital picture or file (or as many as you like) of your postcards to fragmentamalta@gmail.com.
Please take the picture on a white sheet of paper or on a white background, similar to the examples in this post. Thank you in advance for everybody who will share this experience!
The slideshow will be displayed without credit of the owner. However, the names of the postcard-owners will be displayed as contributors to this event in the FRAGMENTA-blog and for announcement of the event. Should you prefer to remain anonymous, please inform us.
Please send files or postcards by Wednesday, May 21st, 6pm.
CONTEXT – Design Week :
Malta Design Week is starting next week and we are collectively getting design-animated and our “dexcigntement” is growing (mix of design and excitement, neologism). Turning to Wikipedia, our friend for so many questions, we learn that “design is a specification of an object, manifested by an agent, intended to accomplish goals, in a particular environment, using a set of primitive components, satisfying a set of requirements, subject to constraints.” Further on we read that “Substantial disagreement exists concerning how designers in many fields, whether amateur or professional, alone or in teams, produce designs. Dorst and Dijkhuis argued that “there are many ways of describing design processes” and discussed “two basic and fundamentally different ways”, both of which have several names. The prevailing view has been called “The Rational Model”,”Technical Problem Solving” and “The Reason-Centric Perspective”. The alternative view has been called “Reflection-in-Action”,”Evolutionary Design”,”co-evolution”and “The Action-Centric Perspective”.
